Carcoar

Historic Buildings, Carcoar

Carcoar is one of Australia's historic gems. There has been no reconstruction or replication, only preservation and restoration.

As the third oldest settlement west of the Blue Mountains, Carcoar is a wealth of history and a must for all visitors to the Blayney Shire. Although third, the village comes in first in terms of heritage, appeal, charm and tourist value.

Nestled in a small, sheltered valley through which wanders the Belubula River, Carcoar is easily accessible with the busy Mid Western Highway passing right by but far enough away to retain the village's peaceful atmosphere and unique style.

The best way to see Carcoar is to walk. You can really appreciate the treasures which have led to the town being classified by the National Trust. From the two magnificent churches overlooking the village to the imposing Court House in the centre of town, onwards to the railway station above the village and to the secluded hospital to the east, it is not hard to imagine what life would have been like in the village in the 1800's.
